Shaping the neck profile using spoke shaves of all types flat convex and curved profile tools are used dependent on the wood I am working with. I sometimes on occasions use wood rasps, again this is driven by the type of wood. In this picture I am working the profile of a Maple neck which seems happier with spoke shaves as opposed to rasps.

Did you notice the modulation to the relative major for the B section followed by a descending series of dominant sevenths and a modified plagal cadence returning to the original key ? … Nice !

DQ: The ‘answer’ or comment box is at the foot of an ascending list of comments. If the list can’t be re-ordered then it should at least be at the top.
SA: Fixed

DQ … if not it means that private views aren’t actually private when somebody can view by following a simple link …
SA That is why the link is set to expire after 5 minutes. If you look closely at the URL for a “Just Me” or “People in my circle” file you will notice that the signature changes each time.

There are three types of URL used by sharehost:

  • service.sharehost.co.uk/etc… access to these is controlled by sharehost
  • originals.sharehost.co.uk/etc… these are used for the original file link for publicly visible asses . they silently redirect to Amazon Web Services where the original files are stored.
  • s3.amazonaws.com/sharehost/etc… these are for original file link for “Just Me” and “People In My Circle” assets. Amazon requires a secret code to generate a public URL for these files. Sharehost knows the secret key and asks Amazon for a new URL for the file (which expires after a few minutes) each time you click on the original file link.

General Answer to DQs

My approach to developing this is

“Do the simplest thing that could possibly be useful and then improve on it bit by bit”

So the general answer to these questions is that it’s own of the “bits” that I’ve not improved yet.

But do keep the DQ’s coming in. It’s better than trying to guess at what people want.

more SADQs

DQ: How do I run a slideshow when the word ‘slideshow’ don’t appear anywhere? (an aunty sue DQ-of-the-day)
SA:-

There’s a Slideshow Button on the gallery page – maybe it’s a bit cryptic?

The original plan was that every Person, Tag, or Asset would have it’s own “Home Page”. eg for the tag Westernbirt the home page is http://service.sharehost.co.uk/tags/westonbirt
or Sues’s home page is http://service.sharehost.co.uk/users/sue.

Those were both examples of “Friendly Links” but the trouble is they are not permanent. If Sue changes her username to “Aunty Sue Jackson” then the home page address changes as well. There is also a “permanent link” that stays the same even when things are renamed – in sues case it’s http://service.sharehost.co.uk/users/15/home

At the moment the format of the home page is fixed to be a gallery all the photos and mp3 files, but the idea is that you will be able to choose different formats and content in future.
The other draw back is that it just shows all your results in alphabetical order.

Another way to get a gallery page is by going through the People or Tags page. e.g. click on Tags, then click on “nottingham views” this leads to a very unsatisfactory page that is really just a place holder for future developments. Click the button “Assets with tag nottingham views” and you will get to the Assets page but there is an extra “Gallery” button. Sues list of assets viewed as a gallery this way is http://service.sharehost.co.uk/gallery/assets?user_id=15. The order in the gallery is the same as the sort order selected on the assets page.

I’m working on a system that let’s you specify the order. There is no user interface for it yet but you can try http://service.sharehost.co.uk/gallery/assets?user_id=15&order=alphabetical other options being order=oldest_first and order=newest_first – newest_first is the default

Sensible Answers to Daft Questions (SADQs)

DQ: How does one make an uploaded file viewable by one other specific person?
SA: You can’t do that except be creating a new account (with a different email address) and only having one friend.
ITFOT (in the fullness of time) I will add the notion of projects or groups or some such thing where you can control who is in the group. but this adds a whole layer of extra complexity to getting a duplicate free list of everything that should be visible to a particular person.

DQ: How does one edit a list in a comment to add another line rather than adding a new comment like this?
SA: You can’t edit comments or delete them or comment about comments it’s all on the ITFOT list.

DQ: Why are my files called assets when they are files?
SA: Because ITFOT there will be other types of assets that aren’t files. eg links to things on the web, stuff in your dropbox folder or other cloud type things, projects, slideshows, galleries, presentations, music albums, …

DQ: Why don’t the image thumbnails appear as larger versions to start with?…yes I know they’ll take longer to load…I don’t mind
SA: You don’t mind, but others might. Who is to say how big is big enough, etc? I could make it into an option I suppose… I was considering making it pop up a larger version along with other info and options when you hover over the thumb nail.
